Turning to more cycling-focused things for Fall.

Shove-it

Jun 20 2008

H-Street logoI spent a decade skating regularly with a good five years skating day in and day out. From the ages of 10-20, I devoted a lot of time to it, competing here and there and being part of a subculture that didn’t know the X-Games yet and before skateboarders like Tony Hawk became skateboarding’s Jordan.

So much of the culture introduced me to the characters, artists, personalities that have since then appeared in art shows, bands, movies1 and have even been the subject of their own documentary, Beautiful Losers.

Popdeck identity

Popdeck’s new identity as done by me.

Recently, I did a quick identity and design for Popdeck. It’s a site that takes the Threadless model but applies it to skateboard decks. It’s pretty rad. When I was younger, I always wanted to design graphics for decks and here’s a site that allows you to do it. Like the many logos from skateboards that I loved (the thumbnail in the first paragraph is the logo for H-Street), I wanted something that was bright and kinda loud.

The identity was done really quickly, given a smaller budget to work with but I wanted the mark to reflect a skateboard, simply. Nose and tail is evident and I illustrated the trucks. Type is of course, Black Slabbath which fits in with skate culture to me and gives the “deck” of the logo a nice heft and shape.

While I’ve been doing design work for cycling for a while now, it’s nice to go back even further and do a bit of design for my first love.

The identity and redesign aren’t live yet but hopefully, that’ll show up soon enough.

1 I’m looking at you Jason Lee.

I remember before even knowing what the term graphic design meant, I was in love with the H-Street logo and many skateboard graphics. I was a skater for almost a decade and am a designer too. It´s quite amazing how many skaters have become designers.

Nice design for PD.
Cheers.

Cristian – I feel that those who’ve participated or continue to participate in “outsider” or “extreme” sports go hand in hand with a creative streak.

Hokus Pokus is my favourite skate video of all time.

I almost have to ask: is H23 a subtle homage to H-Street and Sal Barbier? Heh.

Love your work.

You are totally right in the creative/sport relation.

“H23”, It sounds good as a homage to H-Street, but it isn´t :P

Another of my favorites is Plan B “The Questionable video” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBeFQLnr6Lw

Anyway, thanks for the comments of my work.
