Turning to more cycling-focused things for Fall.

I Made a Muxtape

Mar 26 2008

MuxtapeAlready a huge success, if the grapevine on the internet is anything to judge it by, Justin Ouellette’s Muxtape is a wonderful idea executed simply and concisely. There are a few quirks (the uploading process is a bit clunky) but otherwise, it’s dead simple to use.

I’ve made a muxtape myself, which spans some current favourites as well as all-time favourite songs, which it leans towards. There’s a definite flow to the mix as I’m particular about that sort of thing from old days of being obsessed with making mixtapes. It starts out a bit brash then gets into a bit of a dance groove then back into moody territory and mellows out. Start strong, build up, chill out.

Frank – I think what Muxtape now needs is “friends” or “favourited muxtapes” to keep track of your friend’s tapes.

Also, pretty psyched to listen to yours. I can tell this is going to be a climatic, instrumental extravaganza!

It’s kind of all over the place, but some of my favs of late (and plenty of older stuff).

Some great tracks on both of yours Naz/Frank—thanks for the link. I’m with Justin O. that for some reason this is instantly more useful than last.fm. Something about distilling your current taste down to 12 tracks without any other frills just works.

Here’s mine:

pretty random. Old favorites, new favorites, and just some good stuff. Glad to see we a common interest in the Velvet Teen!

60% of the people that I talked to about Muxtape assumed it would be something different than what it was. Reminds me of last.fm on a light-weight short url pill. Do I think it will be huge? With help maybe. But as of right now, just another thing I filled out a sign up form for that I wish I hadn’t to begin with.

Justin – some nice selections in there. And I agree, it’s straightforward and simple, which I’m into/

Fabian! – Nice eclectic mix (listening to it now) — really varied which I dig. I love TVT, I forgot to mention that when I saw you in SF, when you had the hoodie on. I love that they change up their approach/concept on each album yet retain their sound.

Patrick – I don’t use last.fm so don’t have anything to compare it to per se. I’m not sure Justin intends the site to be huge in the sense of last.fm — but it’s a dead simple way to share some of the latest songs you’re listening to with friends and others alike. The design, or anti-design almost speaks to me, as a fan of someone who just wants to use something, this is up my alley. The part of me that’s into the idea of creating fun things likes to believe that this is just that — a fun little site to share some music. But I could be wrong.

nah.. I agree Naz. I wasn’t expecting much with it (and agree that upload is a bit clunky) but its a simple clean way to share some music.

I’m curious to see where it might/could go.
-add your own images (think mixtape cover)
-links to friends with muxtape pages
-multiple uploads!

good stuff in the end.

No I think you are 100% on the lightweight style of the Web site. Obviously we have seen great success from things that just so lightweight, that it makes the usability increase drastically. Those services like Twitter. So I think you are right that it is a great way to share what you are listening to, and it has been brought up to me previously that copyright issues might take an interest in the muxtape, or it may not (I don’t know if that’s the reasoning behind the “upload your own music” side of things). I think it has great potential, because of the old idea being brought to the web. Old idea’s ported into the web seem to have made the best Web 2.0 applications… Free TV = YouTube .. and on and on..
But I brought up last.fm only due to the fact that they have been around so much longer, definitely a wrecking ball they will have to get past. But I have been seeing a lot of people engage in WOM during or after their “muxtape creation.”
